Lantern Village Apartment is located in central Gulfton. It has 1,792 units with 1,195 of them located in block 1001. Originally called Colonial House Apartments, the project - one of the biggest in Houston - was built in 1968 during the oil industry boom, consisting of 48 buildings on 48.9 acres of land and was renovated in the early 1980s with a $47 million HUD-backed loan. When the loan defaulted along with the decline in the oil industry, Colonial House was auctioned off for $8.9 million, leaving HUD a $42 million loss. Thereafter it was renamed “Lantern Village Apartment.” Today, Lantern Village provides one-to-four-bedroom, all-bills-paid apartments at a rent ranging from $600 to $1300. It provides luxuries amenities such as 17 swimming pools and community gyms.
